About 109

London based 109 Jewellery is possibly the smallest jewellery brand in the country. Every piece that is sent out is hand made by the designer in the designer’s home. But for being such a small brand then it has a big following of dedicated fans amongst the best sports starts in the country, people from the music industry as well as being spotted on some of the biggest shows in the country. (see the blog for more)

There are 109 beads on a Buddhist prayer necklace. 108 identical beads that symbolize 108 repetitions of prayer and then a 109th bead that invites to a moment of stillness between prayers. This 109th bead is the inspiration behind 109 Jewellery.

The designer Mette Mitchell says: “I would love my pieces to work as the 109th bead in a creative urban life. I would love it if wearing and touching the pieces could remind the wearer of the real goals and values in their life. And maybe also be an invitation to stop for a couple of minutes for a little break from the hustle and bustle. And if nothing else then I simply want 109 to make you feel sexy, focused and optimistic.”

Mette Mitchell is from Denmark and she lives and works in London. The ideas for the 109 collection comes from her extensive travelling, but she is particular inspired by Japan and Buddhism.
The beads are being sourced from various sources from commercial suppliers to individual beads found on vintage jewellery. This also explains why there can be slight variations between each design.

The pieces are sold through a very small secletion of retailers in London and Barcelona.
